The 1970 Dodge Challenger was based on the Plymouth Barracuda platform, but its wheelbase was stretched by two inches to provide more interior room. The Challenger was offered in both hardtop and convertible versions. Performance versions wore the R/T (Road/Track) badge.   The 1970 Challenger came standard with a choice of either the 145 HP 225 single-barrel Slant Six or the 230 HP 318 two-barrel V8. A 275 HP four-barrel 340 V8, a 290 HP two-barrel V8 and a 330 HP four-barrel 383 V8 were also optional. The three optional engines for the Challenger R/T were the 375 HP four-barrel 440 Magnum, the 390 HP 440 Six-Pack with three-two barrel Holley carburetors, and the 425 HP 426 Hemi with twin four-barrel carbs.

In 2008 Dodge released the Dodge Challenger again for all of us Muscle car guys. The 2008 Challenger SRT8 came packing specs like: Limited Edition, numbered dash plaque / 6.1-liter HEMI® V8 engine / Five-speed automatic transmission with AutoStick® / HEMI® Orange Pearl, Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl or Bright  Silver Metallic exterior color options / Dual carbon fiber hood stripes.

The six-speed Tremec TR-6060 manual transmission was added in 2009 for the R/T and SRT Challenger. For 2009, the Hemi engine was upgraded to get higher gas mileage and more power, especially at lower engine speeds, thanks to variable cam timing, an expanded MDS range, an increased compression ratio, improved port flow, and reduced restriction exhaust and induction. Other updates are crankshaft structural upgrades, a dual-mass crankshaft damper, floating pin piston design, valve spring design and oil pump capacity increase for VVT.

A special edition Challenger R/T Classic was also introduced in 2009. Sold in Hemi Orange, TorRed, and (later) B5 Blue, Detonator Yellow, and other colors, the R/T Classic has a “billiard ball” stick-shift knob; the original Challenger script on the sides of the front fenders instead of on the grille; a functional hood scoop; and racing stripes that end with “RT.” The engine will be boosted to 376 horsepower for the manual transmission and 372 for the automatic.

For 2010, the five-speed automatic finally replaced the four-speed across the board. The long-rumored 6.4 liter Hemi V8 may appear for SRT8 models (with cylinder deactivation for reasonable gas mileage), and the Dodge Challenger will get deceleration fuel cutoff to improve gas mileage — even on automatics.

Changes to the 2010 Challenger SRT8  and R/T Classic are a new limited edition Plum Crazy model,  with an plum accent seat-stripe insert. The Official 2010 Dodge Challenger site

2011 found the Challenger with even more changes. No Plum Crazy Purple for 2011 but  a 6.4 - 392 limited edition SRT and more fun new color changes such as Green with Envy.

The 2012 Dodge SRT Challenger’s high-performance interior begins with a new, leather wrapped, heated, SRT-exclusive steering wheel that features a unique satin chrome rim section with a flattened bottom surface that showcases the SRT logo.

Limited-production run of Plum Crazy for 2013 on Dodge Challenger R/T Classic and Dodge Challenger SRT8 editions.

The 2014 Dodge Challenger will also have Plum Crazy Purple as a Fun Color Choice.

In three Fun Versions for our enjoyment - R/T , SRT, and SRT Core Edition.

New for 2014 will be the SHAKER PACKAGE for the R/T version.
